Room to Move Instructors

The teachers at Room to Move are attentive to the diverse abilities and needs of the individual students who attend our classes. Until recently, the tradition of teaching yoga was one on one—in contrast to the group classes that are common today—and much of what was transmitted was based on the relationship that developed between teacher and student. The yoga practice is a dynamic process that changes according to the condition, needs, and intention of the practitioner. It is our intention to provide a class setting that encourages inquiry through the practice of asana (seats/postures), pranayama (breath), mantra, (sacred sound), and dhyana (meditation). We invite you to go inward to discover and cultivate a deeper connection to yourself and to the world around you.

Ilana SmithIlana SmithInstructor & founder of Room to Move
Ilana began her study of yoga and "moving from the inside out" in the late ’60s while she was performing and teaching various forms of traditional and improvisational dance and movement arts. Since her arrival in Port Townsend in 1982, she has taught dance, therapeutic movement, Authentic Movement, and yoga, and has maintained a private practice in psycho-structural bodywork. Ilana has offered classes and workshops locally; regionally in Seattle and at Breitenbush Hot Springs in Oregon; and abroad in several locations in Mexico.

Her early formal yoga training was in the tradition of ashtanga and vinyoga with master Indian teachers Pattabhi Jois, TKV Desikachar, and Baba Hari Das, and their American senior teachers. Later, she continued her training with Ana Forrest, Angela Farmer and Victor Von Kooten. For Ilana, these more recent teachers imbued her practice with a sense of personal discovery and improvisation.

Ilana values and enjoys both traditional and unconventional approaches to yoga, and blends these into her teaching. She has a deep understanding of experiential anatomy and movement and has trained in adaptive yoga therapy, which can aid in movement re-patterning and injury rehabilitation. Her motivation for teaching arises from her passion to share and witness the transformational potential of the yoga practice. With a sense of humor and compassion, Ilana invites students to explore and savor yoga’s moment-to-moment process, exploring the balance between stira (effort) and sukha (ease/joy), and to experience and refine the connection to the inner strength and wisdom deep within the body.

SweethomeSweethomeInstructor
Sweethome has been practicing yoga for 15 years and began teaching 13 years ago. She studied with Sharon Gannon and David Life, the founders of Jivamukti Yoga, and considers their teachings most inspiring and influential. Recently, Sweethome completed the seven-month teacher training course at the Samadhi Yoga Center in Seattle.

Her teaching is grounded in the vinyasa approach. Vinyasa has many meanings, one of which is "flow." Sweethome integrates asana, pranayama, dharana (concentration), mantra, chanting and intellectual inquiry into her classes. She experiences yoga as a science and a means for attaining enlightenment.

Jen BatesJen BatesInstructor
Jen Bates is a Buddhist and a student of Tibetan Dzogchen master Sogyal Rinpoche. She began practicing yoga daily because she was experiencing lower back pain during her sitting meditation. Over time yoga has become an integral part of her spiritual life.

At the heart of Jen's yoga practice is a deep respect for the preciousness of human birth and the belief that the body is a vehicle for enlightenment. The body (asana and breath), speech (mantra), and mind (meditation) will all be explored in her classes. Jen has been a student of Ilana Smith's for ten years and she is greatly inspired by her intuitive, interactive approach to teaching. She intends to incorporate these methods of communication in her classes.

In September, 2008 Jen will begin a six-month yoga teacher training at Samadhi Yoga Center in Seattle. She looks forward to sharing her new knowledge with you.

Tinker CavallaroTinker CavallaroInstructor
Tinker Cavallaro started practicing yoga at the age of 13, when her older sister returned from college and showed her some basic asanas. Tinker loved the practice and has continued it through the years. Twenty years ago, she attended her first yoga class in Port Townsend, with Colleen Swantner. Tinker feels that the strength, flexibility, focus and stamina she gleaned from the practice have supported her in living a physically active and demanding life as an organic farmer and gardener.

In 2003, Tinker completed the yoga teacher training with Baba Hari Das at Mt. Madonna Center in Watsonville, CA. Tinker feels fortunate to have participated in the training and considers it an honor to share what she has learned.

Heather ColeHeather ColeInstructor
Heather Cole began practicing yoga with her father at an early age and then continued the journey on her own. She studied various aspects of yoga within several traditions. Eventually she made her way to India where she had the privilege of meeting Baba Hari Das and Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma). Both of these enlightened beings continue to have an influence on all aspects of her life, including her teaching. In 2004, Heather completed a teaching apprenticeship in Seattle with Lee Atwell and received her teacher training certification. Since then she has taught students of various ages and at all levels.

Heather experiences yoga as a way of life, not just a physical discipline. She feels honored to share its gifts and guidance through her teaching. Her classes often begin with pranayama and a brief meditation, which prepares students to bring increased awareness into the asana practice that follows. Her approach blends attention to alignment with flow, matching the poses with the breath. Heather emphasizes the balance between focus and surrender. Her classes often close with mantra and chanting.

Angelo GattoAngelo GattoInstructor
Angelo Gatto began a daily practice of yoga 10 years ago. From the beginning he was inspired by the ability yoga had to connect his mind, body, and breath, and was further motivated by the transformations those connections encouraged in his life.

In a wish to deepen his study of yoga, Angelo began to take classes from local and visiting teachers in Port Townsend. He recently completed a classically based yoga teacher training program with Baba Hari Das at the Mount Madonna Center in Watsonville, CA.

Angelo is both excited and grateful to be teaching at the Room To Move yoga studio. He is looking forward to sharing what has heart and meaning, and is thankful for the opportunity to deepen his understanding of the question: "Who am I?", through the use of yoga's many beautiful tools.

Lyn GlavianoLyn GlavianoInstructor
Lyn Glaviano has been practicing Hatha yoga for over 30 years. While practicing for many years with Julianne Rice at the Center for Spiritual Enlightenment in San Jose, CA she applied her skills and enrolled in several teacher training courses with Erich Schiffmann, David Swenson, Tracey Rich and Ganga White. She has attended several Yoga Journal Workshops in Estes Park, CO where she was able to study under Ana Forrest, Baron Baptiste, Elise Miller, Judith Lasater, and Rodney Yee. In 2000, she completed her teacher training coursework at the White Lotus Foundation in Santa Barbara, CA.

Michael GlavianoMichael GlavianoInstructor
Michael Glaviano has been practicing yoga for many years and has taken teacher training from Erich Schiffmann, David Swenson, and others. After basic instruction with Julianne Rice at the Center for Spiritual Enlightenment, he took two years of Iyengar instruction with Linda Bonney at Yoga Fitness in Campbell, California. In 2000, he completed teacher training with Tracey Rich and Ganga White at the White Lotus Foundation in Santa Barbara, CA.
